I picked this book up because it's the March pick for the A Beautiful Mess book club and it was already on my "to-read" list, so it seemed like a good time to read it.
One of the categories for the Modern Mrs. Darcy 2015 Reading Challenge is "a book that's currently on the bestseller list." I don't really pay attention to bestseller lists, but as I was reading this book, I thought, "this seems like the kind of book that should be a bestseller." I googled the New York Times Bestseller list (is that what makes a book a "bestseller"? I don't even know) and discovered that All the Light We Cannot See was number five on the list.
(I also discovered that all of the Fifty Shades books and Gone Girl were very high on the list, so maybe that's why I don't pay too much attention to bestseller lists.)
This book was so good. The best book I've read this year. Actually, it's the best book I've read in quite some time. If you read only one book that I write about, this should be it. I'm not one of those book reviewers that writes poetically about books and why you should read them. Just trust me when I say that this book is a beautifully written account of World War II from the perspective of two children, a French girl and a German boy.
Read the book just so you can have your breath taken away when you get to this passage:

"When I lost my sight, Werner, people said I was brave. When my father left, people said I was brave. But it is not bravery; I have no choice. I wake up and live my life. Don't you do the same?"
He says, "Not in years. But today. Today maybe I did.""
Big Little Lies was also on the bestseller list, which I blew through back in January and enjoyed much more than I thought I would. I've also been wanting to read The Girl on the Train, which has been holding the number one spot on the bestseller list for several weeks. Maybe I should be paying more attention to the bestseller list, since it seems like there are some gems hidden in between all of the smut and pop reading.
PS: A book I read because of the cover and abook "everyone" has read but me.
